Box Score 2 Staunton, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team earned its first doubleheader sweep of the season Saturday afternoon at Mary Baldwin, defeating the Fighting Squirrels by 5-3 and 7-2 scores.
Bri Hodges led the way with the bat for the Hornets, slugging two home runs and driving in four runs on the day. Sophie Tully also homered for Lynchburg and doubled twice.
Lynchburg got the bats going early in Game 1 when Hodges clubbed a two-run homer in the first inning. The Hornets continued the assault in the second with Tully's solo home run and again in the third when Karle Cundiff singled in a run.
Mary Baldwin cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom half of the fourth, but freshman Kailey Dorcsis entered in relief and struck out the first batter she faced to squash the rally. Dorcsis went the rest of the way for Lynchburg, tossing 3 ⅓ scoreless innings to earn the win.
The Hornets wasted no time getting things going again. Tully started the assault with an RBI double in the second, and Ashley Hailey made it a 2-0 game in the same frame. An inning later, Hodges smacked another two-run homer to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Lynchburg tacked on three more runs in the late going, while Emily Charlton pitched six innings of two-run ball to earn the victory in the circle.
Lynchburg (5-3) will return for a week of classes before heading to Little River, S.C. next weekend for six games in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
