Roanoke's late run derails women's lacrosse

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's lacrosse team led early in the fourth quarter, but a late Roanoke run earned the Maroons a 10-8 road victory Thursday in a non-conference matchup between the two Old Dominion Athletic Conference rivals.

The Hornets got out to an early 3-0 lead on first-quarter goals by Leah Dumas, Micah Slacum, and Nicki Santora. Lynchburg goalie Patricia Rogers made six of her 18 saves in the first period to keep the Maroons off the board.

Roanoke turned the tables in the second, outscoring the Hornets 3-0 to send the game into halftime knotted, 3-3.

The teams traded blows in the third. After a quiet start to the half, Mia Sullivan and Payton Saville found the back of the net within a minute of one another for a 5-3 Hornets lead. After Roanoke battled back to tie the game again, Dara Gregory and Tori King each scored for a 7-5 Hornet advantage.

Lynchburg led 7-6 headed to the fourth.

RC's Nicole Harrison scored less than 2 minutes into the fourth to even the score again, but Dumas' second goal of the game put Lynchburg back in the lead, 8-7, with 13:12 remaining.

Then the Roanoke defense locked down, and the Maroons scored thrice inside the final 9 minutes to leave Shellenberger Field with a victory.

Rogers matched her season-high with 18 saves, and the freshman also collected six ground balls and caused two turnovers. Gregory, Santora, and Saville each had an assist to go along with her goal. Dumas and Carson Quigley each caused a pair of turnovers, and Alla Daniel collected four draw controls for Lynchburg.

Thursday's game will not count toward the ODAC standings as it was scheduled to replace the teams' games with Eastern Mennonite, who forfeited its season this winter. The two teams will meet again in Salem in an ODAC contest Wednesday, April 6.

Lynchburg (2-4) will look to snap its four-game losing skid Saturday with a trip to Meredith for a noon start.
