Box Score Raleigh, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg's women's lacrosse team could not overcome an early deficit, dropping a 10-4 non-conference decision at Meredith Saturday afternoon.
Four different Hornets – Nicki Santora, Payton Saville, Reagan Bednar, and Alla Daniel – scored goals, and freshman Patricia Rogers made 11 saves in goal and caused three turnovers for Lynchburg.
Meredith jumped out to an early lead with three unanswered goals in the first period, two by Jessica Dowdy. Dowdy put the Avenging Angels up 4-0 with an early second-quarter goal, but Santora responded for the Hornets on a Dara Gregory assist. After another Dowdy goal, Saville netted an unassisted score for Lynchburg's second tally of the game. MC added a sixth goal in the final minute of the second to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
Meredith scored twice more in the third to extend the lead and then twice again in the fourth for a 10-2 advantage before the Lynchburg offense regained the momentum. Bednar scored her first goal as a Hornet with 3:38 remaining, and Daniel added the final goal of the game with 2:57 to play to bring the score to its final standing at 10-4.
Santora led the Hornets with six shots, and the graduate student also caused a pair of turnovers for Lynchburg. Jordan Nilsen highlighted the Lynchburg defense with two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.
The Hornets (2-5) will look to get back in the win column at home Wednesday against in-state rival Christopher Newport. The whistle will sound on Shellenberger Field at 5 p.m.
