Softball wins in extras to split with Bridgewater

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- Sophie Tully delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, helping University of Lynchburg's softball team earn a doubleheader split with visiting Bridgewater Sunday afternoon on Moon Field. The Hornets dropped Game 1, 13-4, before winning Game 2, 4-3 in 8 innings on Tully's walk-off hit.

The day did not start ideally for the Hornets. Bridgewater scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take control of Game 1 early on. Lynchburg countered with a pair of runs on Kaleigh Hackett's two-run double, and BC led 4-2 after a busy opening inning. Bridgewater broke the game open in the next few innings, however, scoring once in the second and twice in the third for a 7-2 lead. The Eagles continued to tack runs on and cruised to the 13-4 win in the opener.

Lynchburg fared much better in the nightcap. The Hornets drew first blood in the bottom of the second, starting with Cundiff's leadoff single. Caroline Joy followed with a double, and Cundiff came around to score when Hackett shot a single through the left side. Lynchburg added a second run in the inning when Skylar Sams, who pinch ran for Joy, scored on a ground ball in the infield.

Bridgewater tied the game at 2-2 on Kathryn Thomas' two-run homer in the fourth, but Lynchburg went right back on top in the bottom half when Cundiff put one over the left-field fence.

BC battled back again an inning later, taking advantage of a leadoff error to tie the ballgame, 3-3, and the contest went to extras at that score.

Hornets pitcher Emily Charlton escaped the top of the eighth, stranding the tiebreak runner on third base. In the bottom half, Lynchburg wasted no time. Lexi Powell moved the Hornets' tiebreak runner, Carly Hudnall, to third with a sacrifice bunt. In the next at bat, Tully promptly ripped a single to right field to plate Hudnall and win it for Lynchburg.

Charlton pitched all eight innings for Lynchburg in Game 2, scattering six hits, striking out one, and allowing just two earned runs.

The walk-off capped a three-win weekend for the Hornets, who swept Eastern Mennonite on the road Saturday and enjoyed a 3-1 start to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. Lynchburg (12-12, 3-1 ODAC) will hit the road Saturday to continue ODAC play at No. 3-ranked Virginia Wesleyan.
