CNU's second-quarter run too much for women's lacrosse

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Nicki Santora poured in four goals and Micah Slacum caused three turnovers, but it wasn't enough to push University of Lynchburg's women's lacrosse team past visiting Christopher Newport Wednesday evening. The Hornets fell 16-11.

Lynchburg junior Alla Daniel won the first three draw controls of the game, but it was the Captains who got on the board first by means of Syd Guidi's third-minute goal. The Hornets quickly rebounded to take the lead, however, scoring on their next two possessions. Santora got the scoring started for Lynchburg thanks to a Libby Kennedy assist at the 12:04 mark and, just over a minute later, Leah Dumas put the Hornets in the lead with the first of her two goals on the evening.

CNU rebounded with four unanswered goals for an early 5-2 lead, but Lynchburg cut the lead to 5-4 by the first quarter's end thanks to goals by Reagan Bednar and Daniel.

The Captains extended the lead to two again with an early second-period goal, but Lynchburg had the answer again. Bednar scored her second of the game on a free-position shot with 11:14 before halftime, and Santora found the back of the net for her second at the 6:38 mark to knot the score at 6-6.

Then came another Captains run. CNU notched five unanswered goals in the final 6 minutes of the first half to head into halftime with an 11-6 lead.

Lynchburg scored thrice in the third to cut the deficit to 13-9 on goals by Daniel, Santora, and Anna Snoddy, but that's as close as the Hornets were able to get. Santora and Dumas each scored in the fourth for Lynchburg.

Daniel finished with six draw controls to go with her two goals and an assist, and Dumas assisted a pair of goals in addition to her two scores. Slacum's three caused turnovers and two ground balls anchored the defensive effort for Lynchburg.

The Hornets (2-6) will face another tall task Saturday to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play: a trip to No. 3-ranked Washington and Lee. First draw in Lexington is scheduled for 1 p.m.
