Softball splits pair of extra inning games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg softball took one of two on the road at Randolph Wednesday afternoon.

The Hornets needed extra innings to take down the WildCats in Game 1. Emily Charlton pitched all eight innings for the Hornets and did not allow a run in the first seven. She struck out one batter while stranding seven runners on base. She earned her ninth win and pitched into extras for the third time this season.

Lynchburg only mustered up five hits in the opening seven frames. Ashley Hailey and Carly Hudnall grabbed back-to-back hits in the third, and Hudnall slashed another hit in the fifth. However, the two teams entered extras in a scoreless tie.

The Hornets unleashed six runs in the eighth inning to blow the game open. Leah Caldwell scored on an error to begin the scoring. Addison Walter tacked on two more runs with a homer, and Kaleigh Hackett put the finishing touches on the scoring outburst with a single to score Jordan Brown

Charlton allowed the ghost runner to score in the bottom half of the frame but bounced back to retire the side and claim the 6-1 victory. Lynchburg now owns three extra-innings victories this season.

After scoring six in the eighth inning of Game 1, the Hornets kept rolling in the first two frames of Game 2. Hudnall scored on a wild pitch, Gracie Dooley slashed an RBI single, and Caldwell grabbed an RBI on a groundout.

Kailey Dorcsis pitched out of two jams before relinquishing the lead in the fourth.

The game remained tied for the next three innings, and the two teams from Lynchburg were destined for extras again. Once more, the Hornets put up a crooked number in the eighth. Caldwell bunted Skylar Sams, the ghost runner, over to third and then Sams scored on a wild pitch. Caroline Joy extended the lead after a pair of walks by driving in Hailey with a single through the infield.

However, the Hornets could not hold onto their lead, and Randolph pushed three across in the bottom half of the inning to walk it off.

Lynchburg saw their five-game winning streak snapped as the third run of the inning crossed the plate.

The Hornets (19-17, 9-5 ODAC) host Ferrum for a crucial conference twin bill beginning at 1:30 p.m.
