Women's lacrosse falls late to Shenandoah

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's lacrosse team couldn't hold onto a second-half lead Friday afternoon, falling 15-11 to visiting Shenandoah on Shellenberger Field.

Nicki Santora led the Hornets' attack with a four-goal game, while Libby Kennedy and Mia Sullivan added two goals apiece for Lynchburg. Tori King contributed a team-best four draw controls along with a goal and a caused turnover.

Shenandoah controlled the game's early going, scoring three unanswered goals to lead in the first 7 minutes. King won the next draw, however, setting up a quick Santora goal off Leah Dumas' assist to take the lid off for Lynchburg. The Hornets stormed back to take a 5-3 lead on goals by Kennedy, Sullivan, Santora, and Dara Gregory late in the first. Another SU goal cut the Lynchburg advantage to 5-4 near first quarter's end.

SU tied the game in the early going of the second, but Sullivan scored on a free-position shot to put Lynchburg back in front. The Hornets led 8-6 at halftime after scores from King and Santora.

The Hornets clung onto a 10-9 lead heading to the fourth, but Shenandoah sparked another run to start the final quarter, scoring three unanswered goals for a 12-10 lead before a Lynchburg timeout.

Santora scored with 8:11 to go to cut the deficit to 12-11, but that's as close as the home team got. SU scored three more unanswered goals to bring the score to 15-11 and secure the key Old Dominion Athletic Conference win.

Lynchburg (4-9, 2-3 ODAC) will be back in action at home Wednesday night at 7 against Randolph-Macon in another pivotal ODAC matchup.
