Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team earned its first home doubleheader sweep of the season, besting Ferrum by 7-5 and 8-2 scores in a key Old Dominion Athletic Conference series Saturday afternoon on Moon Field.
Ashley Hailey led the Hornet offense with five hits and four RBI, and Carly Hudnall had four hits and four more RBI. Emily Charlton and Angela Sperandeo both tossed complete games and earned victories.
Ferrum leapt out to an first-inning lead in Game 1, but Hailey tied the game in the bottom with an RBI single that brought Hudnall around for a 1-1 score.
Lynchburg took a 3-1 lead in the third on back-to-back RBI doubles by Sophie Tully and Karle Cundiff and added three more in the fifth on a two-run double off Gracie Dooley's bat. Hudnall delivered the final blow, a two-run, fifth-inning single that made it 7-1 in Lynchburg's favor.
Ferrum scored four runs in the final two innings but couldn't bring the score closer, and Lynchburg headed into the nightcap headed for the sweep.
In Game 2, Lynchburg sprinted to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Bri Hodges started the rally with a leadoff single, and Hailey drove in two with a single later in the frame. Hudnall brought in two more runs with a single to make it a four-run Lynchburg lead.
The Hornets improved the lead to 6-0 in the third and cruised to victory.
