Softball splits with Mary Washington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team earned a doubleheader split with visiting Mary Washington Sunday, winning the opener by a 4-2 score before dropping the nightcap, 7-5.

Anna Grace Terrell had four hits and four RBI on the day to lead the Hornet offense, while Gracie Dooley had two hits and drove in three runs in Game 2. Emily Charlton appeared in the circle in both games, earning the save with a scoreless inning in the opener before posting two more shutout innings in relief in the nightcap.

Lynchburg leapt out to an early lead in Game 1 when Kaleigh Hackett was hit by a pitch with one out. Hackett then stole second, moved to third on a Karle Cundiff single, and scored on Terrell's RBI base knock to put the Hornets up, 1-0.

Right-hander Kailey Dorcsis dazzled in the early going for the Hornets, shutting Mary Washington out through the first 5 innings. Lynchburg's offense gave the freshman some breathing room in the bottom of the fifth. Ashley Hailey led off the inning with a single and stole second. Sophie Tully drove Hailey in, reaching on an Eagles error with one out in the inning. Two batters later, Terrell delivered a two-run single to make it a 4-0 Lynchburg lead.

Mary Washington struck back in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run, but Dorcsis escaped the inning with no more damage. Charlton then came through with a scoreless seventh to nail down her second save of the season.

The Hornets came out hot in Game 2 as well. Terrell put the home team on top with a first-inning RBI single, and Lynchburg added two more in the second with RBI by Dooley and Hailey. Dooley came through again an inning later, clubbing a two-run single to make it 5-1 in the Hornets' favor. Then the UMW offense woke up. The Eagles scored two runs in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take a 7-5 lead and held on for the win.

Lynchburg (15-13) will get back to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Tuesday with a roadtrip to No. 6-ranked Randolph-Macon in a battle between teams tied atop the league standings.
