Box Score Salem, Va. -- The 24th-ranked University of Lynchburg softball team kept its Old Dominion Athletic Conference title hopes alive Saturday morning with a 6-1 victory over Ferrum at the Moyer Sports Complex.
Kailey Dorcsis pitched a gem for the Hornets, allowing just two hits and a run in the complete-game win. Sophie Tully and Gracie Dooley each had two hits and two RBI for the Hornets.
The top-seeded Hornets wasted no time getting on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Carly Hudnall reached on an error to start the rally and moved to second on Ashley Hailey's bunt single. Tully promptly singled Hudnall home for a 1-0 lead and, later in the inning, Dooley slugged a one-out double over the center fielder's head to bring home a second run.
Lynchburg struck again in the third thanks to Hailey's leadoff walk followed by an RBI double from Tully. Dooley and Kaleigh Hackett collected RBI later in the inning for a 5-0 Hornet lead.
Meanwhile, Dorcsis carried a no-hitter into the fourth before Ferrum's Skylar Swaney hit a two-out single to break up the no-hitter. The Hornets got out of the inning on the play, however, when Hackett gunned down the Panther baserunner at third.
FC got on the board in the sixth with a single run, but Lynchburg added insurance in the bottom half when Lexi Powell scored on a wild pitch.
Dorcsis slammed the door with a scoreless seventh for her seventh win of 2022.
Lynchburg (25-18) advances in the loser-out bracket to play No. 13-ranked Randolph-Macon. Inclement weather in the Roanoke Valley forced the postponement of the remainder of Saturday's tournament competition. That game will now be played at 9 a.m. Sunday on Moyer's Field 3.
