Box Score 2 Ashland, Va. -- Jordan Brown hit a go-ahead homer in the nightcap, Anna Grace Terrell collected four hits, and University of Lynchburg's softball team took another game from a top-10 ranked opponent Tuesday, salvaging a doubleheader split with No. 6 Randolph-Macon on the road Tuesday. R-MC won the opener, 2-1 in 8 innings, before Lynchburg rallied for a 10-8 victory in Game 2.
Things started off well for the Hornets, who made use of a Carly Hudnall leadoff single in the first inning of Game 1 for an early lead. Reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the week Anna Grace Terrell singled Hudnall home with two out in the inning.
Randolph-Macon came up with a rally of its own in the bottom of the first to tie the score, and then the game became a pitchers' duel. Hornets right-hander Kailey Dorcsis allowed just one Yellow Jackets baserunner between the second and sixth innings, holding the high-powered R-MC offense in check. Meanwhile, Lynchburg got nothing going either, and the game went to extra innings tied, 1-1.
The Hornets were held off the board in the top of the eighth, setting the table for Macon in the bottom. Yellow Jackets leadoff hitter Sami Davidson laid down a bunt single to move the tiebreak run to third, and Kayla Horesky drove her in to win the game for the hosts.
Game 2 started in similar fashion. Lynchburg rallied for two in the top of the first (RBI singles by Terrell and Brown), but the Yellow Jackets again had the answer, tying the score, 2-2, after an inning of play.
The Hornets struck again in the third, Brown slugging a two-out double to plate Terrell and put Lynchburg in front. But the lead didn't last long. Randolph-Macon hit back-to-back homers to start the bottom of the third and added another in the inning for a 5-3 advantage that they carried into the sixth.
Terrell sparked another Lynchburg rally in the penultimate inning, reaching on an error to start the momentum. After a Karle Cundiff walk, Brown launched her first-career home run to left field to put the Hornets back ahead. Lynchburg wasn't done. Sarah English delivered a pinch-hit single to spark another assault, followed by Ruby Stewart's single. Lexi Powell attempted to bunt the runners over, but the Randolph-Macon defense threw the ball away, and all three Hornet baserunners came around to score. Hailey later came around on a Terrell base hit to make it 10-5 in Lynchburg's favor.
R-MC rallied for three in the bottom half, but Dorcsis came in to shut the door, locking down her second save of the season. Bre Carter earned the win in relief.
The victory was Lynchburg's third over a top-10 opponent this season, following the Hornets' Saturday sweep of then-No. 9 Virginia Wesleyan. Lynchburg (16-14) will continue ODAC play Saturday with a home doubleheader against another top-10 club, No. 10-ranked Roanoke College. Game 1 will begin at 1 p.m.
