Volleyball takes ODAC opener from Guilford

Box Score

Greensboro, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg's volleyball team opened the Old Dominion Athletic Conference portion of its schedule with a four-set victory Wednesday night, earning a 25-22, 27-25, 23-25, 25-17 win at Guilford.

Junior Mya Green set a new career-high with 48 assists, while senior Abbi Leeper's 16 kills and freshman Bree Spainhour's 13 kills led the Hornet attack.

The match's first set saw the two teams battling until a 7-0 Guilford run put the Quakers ahead, 20-17, and forced a Lynchburg timeout. The Hornets rallied out of the break to win eight of the final 10 balls for an early advantage.

Lynchburg fell behind late in the second as well and nearly faced a tie match before Spainhour put down a key kill on set point to extend play. After the Quakers retook a one-point lead, Kailey Keough spiked a kill of her own, Spainhour and Princess Salifou teamed up for a block, and Sophia Rucker delivered an ace to put Lynchburg in control with a two-set lead.

Guilford took the third set, but the Hornets rallied in the fourth to win comfortably. Spainhour put down the match-clinching block to cap off her breakout evening.

Keough racked up nine kills, eight digs, and five aces on the night, while Cassi Blackmore collected a team-best 17 digs for the Hornets. Lynchburg's back line again played tremendous defense with Abbey Barlow (14) and Jordan Bartemeyer (10) also reaching double-figure digs and Green just missing on her sixth double-double of the season with nine digs. Salifou had seven blocks for a new career-high, adding to Spainhour's six.

The victory stretched Lynchburg's win streak over its conference rival to three matches, the longest for the Hornets over Guilford since 2014-16. The Hornets have won their ODAC opener each of the past three seasons.

Lynchburg (5-2, 1-0 ODAC) will hop on the bus again this weekend, this time for three matches at Mary Washington, beginning with Friday's 8 p.m. match against William Peace. The Pacers topped Lynchburg in four sets Sept. 10.
