Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Mzizi wins it for No. 11 field hockey in overtime

Swarthmore, Pa. -- University of Lynchburg field hockey freshman Khanyisile Mzizi turned her seventh-collegiate goal into the game-winner in a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against No. 24 Swarthmore on Sunday afternoon.

For the third time this season and the second time in as many days, 60 minutes have not been enough to determine a winner in Lynchburg field hockey games.

Just a day after a 3-2 overtime defeat at the hands of No. 13 Kean Saturday afternoon, the 11th-ranked Hornets flipped the script to overcome a 1-0 deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime before ultimately icing the game off the Mzizi strike.

Olivia van Metre recorded her first-career assist on the pass to set up Lynchburg's 13th win of the season.

In a first half that went largely without incident, Lynchburg took all of the game's three shots and five penalty corners but failed to convert them into goals as the pair of teams vied for possession before ultimately ending the half deadlocked at zero.

The action picked up in the third quarter as the two teams combined to take 11 shots and eight corners with Swarthmore breaking the ice with the game's first score in the 38th minute.

Facing a second half deficit for the third time in the past six games, Lynchburg entered the fourth quarter needing at least one goal to force overtime for the second-consecutive game.

The Hornets found that score when first-year Renee Van Thiel blasted an unassisted shot in from distance to knot the score at one apiece with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest.

The tally was the most important to date of Van Thiel's three goals in the freshman's eighth-consecutive start for head coach Enza Steele's squad.

Lynchburg generated three more corners while Swarthmore took a pair but the two teams got off just one shot in the remainder of regulation to send the game to extra time.

Just two shots were taken and only one was on target in the seven-plus minute overtime period, the longest that Lynchburg has seen this year.

Each of those shots were taken by Lynchburg's Mzizi with the second glancing off a Swarthmore defender and into the back of the cage to give Lynchburg its third win over a ranked opponent this season.

Two of Lynchburg's ranked wins have been secured in overtime and all three have come away from Shellenberger Field.

With the score, Mzizi has now recorded a goal in three-straight games. The Zimbabwe under-21 national team member ranks second on the team with seven goals in a standout freshman campaign.

Lynchburg (13-2, 5-0 ODAC) wrapped up nonconference play with an impressive 8-2 mark against a difficult schedule and will have a few days to rest before traveling across the commonwealth to take on Roanoke on Wednesday, Oct. 18 in conference play.
