Coach Steele earns 900th-overall coaching victory

Salem, Va. -- University of Lynchburg field hockey head coach Enza Steele recorded her 900th coaching victory between field hockey and women's lacrosse as the Hornets defeated Roanoke 3-1 Wednesday night.

Steele earned her 650th field hockey win in September and now has 659 field hockey wins paired with 241 women's lacrosse victories.

After falling behind early, the 12th-ranked Hornets responded to the tune of three-straight second half goals to win their second straight game and improve to 6-0 in ODAC play with three games remaining.

The game pitted two of the top three teams in the ODAC standings against one another and with the victory, Lynchburg now holds victories over each of the top-five teams in the preseason coaches poll.

Roanoke got on the board first in the fourth minute, registering just the fourth time this season that Lynchburg has been scored on in the first half.

Despite the deficit, Lynchburg set the tone for the game by opening up a 13-2 shot advantage that would balloon into a 19-4 lead at the half including 11 penalty corners.

Lynchburg took all eight shots in the third to right the ship offensively .

The visiting Hornets got on the board with an early second half goal from leading scorer Marlou Wendriks, her 14th of the season, with reigning conference player of the week Khanyisile Mzizi assisting.

Riley Winefordner doubled the advantage with her second goal of the season off an extended penalty corner attempt, giving Lynchburg its first lead in the game's 36th minute.

After Kayla Brady faced four-straight shots to open the final period, Kessa Shaffer dealt the crushing blow in the 52nd minute to put the game out of reach.

Brady made each of her seven saves in the fourth quarter to protect the Lynchburg lead and has made 22 saves over the past three games, the most of any three-game stretch this season.

Lynchburg wrapped up a three-game road trip and will return to Shellenberger Field Saturday, October 21 for a 1:30 p.m. date with Eastern Mennonite in the regular season home finale for the Hornets.

With a win over Eastern Mennonite on Saturday and losses from Shenandoah and Bridgewater, Lynchburg (14-2, 6-0, ODAC) can clinch the top overall seed in the upcoming ODAC tournament.
