Huntington, Pa. -- The University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team defeated Catholic in five sets and lost to defending-national champion Juniata on Saturday.
After losing the first set to Catholic, Lynchburg bounced back to take the next two. Bree Spainhour led the way with five kills in the second set and six in the third. She tied for the team lead in kills posting 15 alongside Ava Meinhardt.
Lynchburg led by as many as 13 in the third set as the Hornets took a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Hornets trailed at the switch in the fifth set, but two kills from Meinhardt and an ace from Jaina Leek put the Hornets in the lead 9-8. After Catholic responded with a four-point run, the Hornets closed out the match outscoring Catholic 8-2. Spainhour and Williamson tallied the last two kills for the Hornets.
Four Hornets posted double-digit kills, and three Hornets came up with double-digit digs. Cassi Blackmore led the way with 17 digs.
The Hornets were swept by Juniata thanks to a .459 hitting percentage from the Eagles. Williamson and Princess Salifou tied for the team high in kills with four each.
With still more than a week until the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament starts on Tuesday, Nov. 7, the Hornets (10-11, 6-6 ODAC) travel to Lookout Mountain, Ga. for three matches beginning with Huntington on Friday, Nov. 3.
