Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team lost to Marymount 73-71 in the final game of the third-annual Wayne Proffitt Classic on Wednesday night.
Lynchburg trailed by two with 1.7 seconds left in the game with Cameron O'Conner at the line. He missed the first attempt forcing him to have to miss the second on purpose to give Lynchburg a chance at extending the game. His purposeful miss caromed off the front of the rim directly to Piercen Young who came streaking in from the 3-point line. However, Young was called for a lane violation giving the Saints the ball.
On the following in-bound play for Marymount, Young intercepted the ball at the top of Lynchburg's 3-point line, but his potential game-winning 3 bounced off the back of the rim.
O'Conner finished with seven points, and Young was one of four players for the Hornets in double figures. Young and Deondre Ross both scored 12, Miles Taylor had 11, and Jonathan Foust led the way with 17. It marked a season-high for Foust who also scored 16 in the win over Centre on Tuesday.
The game was tied 12-12 early on until Lynchburg built a lead late in the first. A six-point run had Lynchburg up by seven with 5:20 to go before half. Michale Gray hit a 3 to give Lynchburg its largest lead of the half at 31-23, but the Saints closed the gap to just one point by halftime.
Lynchburg extended the lead to start the second, and Foust had Lynchburg up seven after making a layup with 17:17 to play.
However, once Marymount took a lead at the 13:06 mark, Lynchburg never led again.
The Hornets (6-5) play Spalding in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Friday, Dec. 29.
