Salisbury, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg's beach volleyball team made its program debut Tuesday afternoon, dropping a pair of 4-1 decisions on the road at Catawba.
Freshmen Kailey Keough and Jordan Palmer won the points for the Hornets in both matches. The duo claimed victory at the second flight in the opener with a 21-16, 21-15 win over CC's Morgan Childress and Kelcie Love. The Hornets also had close ones at No. 1, where Mady Shirey and SJ Yanz fell, 21-18, 21-19, and at No. 4, where Margo Fox and Parker Lynch dropped a 21-16, 22-20 decision.
In the nightcap, Keough and Palmer were again victorious at No. 2, again topping Childress and Love in straight sets, 21-14, 21-15. At No. 5, Ali Simon and Molly Ballew captured the first set, 21-17, before falling 21-4 and 15-8. Shirey and Yanz were again tough at the top of the lineup but dropped a straight-set match by a 21-18, 21-19 tally.
The match was the first-ever official competition for Lynchburg's beach volleyball program in its inaugural season. The Hornets will return home Saturday to look for the team's first-ever win. The Hornets will have two chances to accomplish that with a doubleheader against Richard Bland beginning at noon.
