Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's beach volleyball team earned an historic victory Saturday, topping Richard Bland by a 3-2 score in the opening match of a weekend doubleheader. The Hornets fell in the nightcap, also 3-2.
The top-flight pair of SJ Yanz and Mady Shirey earned victories in both matches, as did No. 2 duo Kailey Keough and Jordan Palmer.
Lynchburg's No. 3-flight pair, Amanda Trapp and Mackenzie Ingrassia, made the difference in the opening match, winning by a 21-14, 24-22 score. Yanz and Shirey were victorious, 21-16 and 21-18, while Keough and Palmer also won in straight sets, 21-10 and 21-16. The victory was Lynchburg's first-ever for the first-year program, and it came against the 2022 NJCAA indoor national champions.
Richard Bland rallied to win the late match by that same 3-2 score, claiming victory at the third, fourth, and fifth flights. Keough and Palmer won in straight sets at the second flight, and Yanz and Shirey won in a decisive third set in the top spot in the order for Lynchburg's second team point.
The Hornets (1-3) will return to action next weekend in LaGrange, Ga., at the Panthers' weekend tournament.
