Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2023 season at home Saturday, falling 14-6 to visiting Mary Washington.

Freshman Sydney Dumas had an impressive collegiate debut for the Hornets, scoring three goals and adding an assist to her tally. Reagan Bednar, Libby Kennedy, and Alla Daniel also scored goals for Lynchburg.

Mary Washington jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but Bednar made it a 2-1 game with a free-position goal about 5 minute into the contest. The Eagles took control from there, though, scoring the next seven goals to lead 9-1 at halftime.

Dumas netted all three of her hat trick in the second half, and the Hornets won the fourth quarter by a 3-2 margin.

Meredith Bornholdt led the Lynchburg defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Daniel had a team-best six draw controls.

UMW's Maya Koebke led the visitors with a game-best five goals.

Lynchburg (0-1) will return to home action Saturday, February 25 against St. Mary's (Md.) at 7 p.m.
