Softball splits at Sea Gull Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Salisbury, Md. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team split a Friday double-header at the Seagull Classic.

Against The College of New Jersey, Addison Walter set the tone early for the Hornets leading the game off with her first homer of the year. This was Walter's first-career leadoff home run and her fourth round-tripper overall.

Senior Sophie Tully followed suit with a long ball of her own bringing home Sarah Watts and making the score 3-0 early.

Watts came around to score again in the 5th when Olivia Herman singled through the left side moving the score to 4-1. Watts led the team with two runs and three hits.

Sophomore Kailey Dorcsis made her fourth start on the mound this year for Lynchurg. Dorcsis pitched a complete game only allowing one earned run and striking out seven. On the season, the sophomore has an impressive 0.23 ERA through 30.1 innings, striking out 30 batters as well. She came into the game against TCNJ without allowing a run in six appearances. Dorcsis earned her sixth win on the season (6-0) as the Hornets took down TCNJ 4-1.

Game 2 was all about junior pitcher, Emily Charlton. Facing the top-ranked team in the country, Salisbury, Charlton went the distance. A Salisbury team that has averaged 7.8 runs per game this season were held to just one by the dominant performance. In 6.2 innings, the junior allowed one earned run and struck out five.

The Lynchburg defense supported Charlton with 20 putouts, two double plays, and no errors.

Despite the valiant effort in the circle, the Hornets fell 1-0. The Sea Gulls walked off in the 7th on base hit to left field.

Lynchurg (8-4) will face No. 1 Salisbury again on Saturday, March 17, at 11 a.m. The Hornets also play Swarthmore at 1 p.m.
