Charlton nearly perfect in No. 16 softball's split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg softball junior Emily Charlton pitched six perfect innings against Guilford Saturday.

Lynchburg's ace shut out the Quakers in her complete-game performance as the 16th-ranked Hornets defeated Guilford 2-0 in Game 1 of the double-header. The Hornets fell 3-2 in Game 2.

As the Atlantic Shores Christinan product sat down batter-after-batter early on in Game 1, the Hornet offense put up runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. Olivia Herman drove in the first run of the game with a single to left, and Gracie Dooley brought home Carly Hudnall with a double in the 3rd.

The Quakers finally got to Charlton in the 7th for three hits, but Sarah Watts threw out a runner at home to preserve Charlton's third-career shutout.

During the 2nd innings of Game 2, Guilford scored its first run of the day facing Angela Sperandeo. Hudnall tied the game up in the bottom of the frame, and Herman gave Lynchburg the lead in the 3rd with an RBI single.

Sperandeo only allowed three runs on the day but took the loss as the Hornets could not push any more runs across the plate after the 3rd.

Madison Barnes and Abby Lockhart reached base as pinch hitters in the 5th, but the Hornets left the bases loaded. The Hornets went quietly in the final two innings and took the split with Guilford after a 3-2 decision.

Lynchburg (13-9) hits the road for a double-header with Ferrum on Sunday, April 2 beginning at 1 p.m.
