Softball swept at home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team was one out away from winning its third game against a top-10 team, but Randolph-Macon persevered and swept Lynchburg in the Hill City on Tuesday.

Down to their last out, the Yellow Jackets came back from a one-run deficit with a two-RBI single and held on for the win in Game 1. Randolph-Macon took down the Hornets 4-0 in Game 2.

The ninth-ranked Yellow Jackets started off the day scoring runs in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th.

Gracie Dooley broke up the no-hitter in the 4th, but the Hornets did not break through in the scoring column until the 5th.

Karle Cundiff and Sophie Tully led off the inning with back-to-back hits. Kaleigh Hackett singled to score Lynchburg's first run bringing home the pinch runner Ruby Stewart

Three batters later, Dooley recorded her second hit of the day, and this time, it carried a little more weight than just breaking up a no-hitter. She doubled to left and brought home three runs giving Lynchburg a 4-3 lead.

Emily Charlton took over in the circle for the starter, Kailey Dorcsis, in the 5th. The lefty retired Randolph-Macon quietly in the 6th but worked into trouble in the 7th. With one out, the Yellow Jackets slapped back-to-back hits and knocked Charlton out of the game. Dorcsis re-entered and got her next batter to pop out, but the Yellow Jackets retook the lead with a two-RBI double.

Hackett led off the bottom of the inning with a double but was later thrown out at home on a squeeze bunt play, and the Yellow Jackets held on for the 5-4 win.

Randolph-Macon shut out Lynchburg in Game 2. Hackett tallied her third hit of the double-header, Cundiff reached base twice with a single and a walk, and Skylar Sams got a base knock in her pinch-hit opportunity, but the Hornets could not recreate the magic of the first game and were swept for the first time in conference play.

Lynchburg (17-13, 6-6 ODAC) host No. 1 Christopher Newport on Friday, April 14 beginning at 2 p.m.
