Women's lacrosse wins high-scoring affair

Box Score

Ashland, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's lacrosse team won a thriller over Randolph-Macon Saturday night.

Sydney Dumas scored six goals as the Hornets held on for a 16-15 victory over the Yellow Jackets on the road.

The Hornets faced a three-goal deficit early into the game. Dumas and Neely Morris teamed up to quickly erase the R-MC lead and create Lynchburg's own advantage. The pair of freshmen scored two goals each putting the Hornets up 4-3.

The game stayed close through the first half. Dumas left her mark on the opening 30 minutes with four scores closing out the second quarter with a player-up goal on a free-position shot 12 seconds before break.

The Hornets rode the momentum into the second half and took advantage of a wild third quarter featuring five cards between the two teams.

Lynchburg built a 14-10 lead on five goals with three coming while a player-up. Jordan Nilsen, Dumas, and Tori King scored Lynchburg's player up goals.

The Yellow Jackets would not go away and nearly closed the four-goal deficit. R-MC scored three-straight times to open the final stanza, but McKenna Steinau stopped the run with her second of the night.

Dumas re-extended Lynchburg's lead to three with her sixth score of the night with 1:07 remaining.

The Kennebunk, Maine native's career night helped the Hornets keep the home team at bay. R-MC scored twice in the closing 45 seconds and won the final draw control of the night. The Yellow Jackets missed a shot with 10 seconds left while a player-up, and Patricia Rogers scooped up the ground ball to seal the deal.

Rogers made 12 saves in her third win of the season. The sophomore goalie has made double-digit saves in the last three starts.

Lynchburg (5-8, 3-2 ODAC) hosts Ferrum on Wednesday, April 19 at 6 p.m.
