Box Score 2 Bridgewater, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team split with Bridgewater on the road Wednesday.
Emily Charlton went the distance in a 2-1 win in Game 1, and Sarah Watts had a two-hit performance in the 5-2 loss during Game 2.
As Charlton was dealing in the circle through a 0-0 tie up until the 5th inning, Lynchburg only put together three hits. After Bridgewater managed to cross home against Charlton, Lynchburg sent its 9-1-2 hitters to the plate in the top of the 6th.
Getting her second-straight start, Alyssa Talayumptewa made hard contact but lined out to the left-center gap. The leadoff hitter, Carly Hudnall, drew a walk to start the rally. Lexi Powell bunter her over, and Watts singled her home.
Hudnall drove in the go-ahead run in the next inning. With the bases loaded, she grounded one to the shortstop who deferred to get the out at third instead of aiming for Addison Walter going home. Walter's run proved to be the difference as Charlton retired the side in the 7th and earned her eighth victory.
Talayumptewa drove in the first run of Game 2 with a sacrifice fly on another line drive to left center, but a four-run 4th from the Eagles proved to be too much for the Hornets.
Olivia Herman drove in Watts in the 7th, but Lynchburg could not find its second comeback of the day and fell 5-2.
Charlton came into the game and did not allow a run over the last two innings.
With two series left on the conference schedule for Lynchburg, the league standings are very congested. Five of the top-six teams have nine or 10 wins while Va. Wesleyan sits in first with 11. Lynchburg is in sixth place.
