Owings Mills, Md. -- The University of Lynchburg beach volleyball team completed its inaugural regular season Saturday.
The Hornets lost to Stevenson 3-2 and Berry 5-0.
After being swept by Berry in the first match of the day, Lynchburg battled Stevenson, the defending national champions, tough in the second match.
Molly Ballew and Landon Spotts started the match with a three-set loss. Playing at the fifth flight, the duo won the first set 21-19. Stevenson won the second set, and Spotts and Ballew fell 9-15 in the third.
After Margo Fox and Parker Lynch fell at No. 3, Amanda Trapp and Mackenzie Ingrassia earned Lynchburg's first point at No. 4. Trapp and Ingrassia split the first two sets 21-19, 19-21. In the third, the duo sailed to a 15-6 victory.
Stevenson claimed the decisive point at No. 2 after SJ Yanz and Mady Shirey were defeated 16-21, 20-22. However, Kailey Keough and Jordan Palmer grinded out another three-set W at the first flight. Keough and Palmer won 21-18 in the first set and fell 18-21 in the second. Lynchburg's top pairing won the third set 15-11.
The Hornets (10-18) proved they can compete with the top teams in the country and look to put that on display at the American Volleyball Coaches Association small colleges national championship in Taveres, Fla. beginning Thursday, April 13.
