No. 13 Lynchburg Claims 7th Straight Win Over W&L

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey squad started off the Homecoming Saturday slate right with an assertive 4-1 victory over Washington and Lee this afternoon on Shellenberger Field.

The Hornets (11-2, 4-0) continue their unbeaten streak in conference play with today's win. The month of October has seen nothing but Lynchburg triumphs in all seven of its matches thus far. 13 games into the season, the Hornets have protected their house and have won all seven games at home.

Just 2:43 into the contest, Lynchburg grabbed the advantage following a goal from senior Olivia van Metre, who battled in front of the cage to slide it past the keeper. The Hornets stayed in front for the remainder of the outing. The sides fought back-and-forth for over 20 minutes before Lynchburg doubled its lead at the 23:58-mark. Senior Madison Mark dished it to freshman Maddie Schuchter, who fired it into the back of the net and gave the home squad a 2-0 lead. The Generals got one back just before the end of the half after Betty Boatwright crossed it to Margaret Cover on a breakaway, and the teams went into the halftime intermission with a Lynchburg edge, 2-1.

Neither side was able to convert in the third period. Less than three minutes into the final frame, Schuchter fed a penalty corner to sophomore Khanyisile Mzizi, who fired it between the pipes. Netminder Julia McDonald got the stop, but freshman Callie Short was right there to catch the rebound and capitalize on the opportunity to cushion the Hornets' lead with 12:38 to go. Two minutes and 48 seconds later, sophomore Anna Dorrestijn found Madison Mark for the game-sealing goal and Lynchburg finished out the affair on top.

Penalty corners have been a bright spot for the Hornet squad this season. Three of the home team's four goals were converted off of opportunities that stemmed from penalty corners. Lynchburg owned a 13-2 margin in the category today and it played a significant role in the Hornets' victory. Lynchburg also out-shot Washington and Lee in the competition, 17-5, including a 10-4 margin in goals on cage.

The field hockey squad returns to Shellenberger Field for its next game when they host Sweet Briar on Wednesday, October 23 at 4:30 p.m.
