Lynchburg Va. -- The Lynchburg Hornets are headed to the ODAC semifinal for the first time since 2017 after taking down the Guilford Quakers 3-1.
The two squads began by trading punches in the opening frame. Nonetheless, in the latter stages of the first set, the Hornets began to pull away. A 6-0 run at the end of the set gave Lynchburg the 25-17 win, as the Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, Lynchburg picked up right where they had left off. The Hornets began the second frame with an 8-0 lead that included two aces from
Jaina Leek. It was smooth sailing for Lynchburg for the remainder of the set, as the crew went on to clinch another 25-17 win.
With their back against the wall, the Quakers found another gear. Down 11-4 in the third set, the Quakers began to slowly inch their way back into the contest. Led by Chrisbel Alcantara's six kills in the third frame, Guilford rallied for a 27-25 win to force a fourth set.
Leek finished the contest with 40 assists, her third time reaching the 40 mark this season.
Morgan Clarke tied a season-high for digs as well with 26.
Late in the fourth frame, tied a 21 a piece, it felt as though the reverse sweep was looming. Lynchburg had yet to win a conference game this season after giving up a set. Nevertheless, the Hornets strung together four consecutive points and a kill from
Bree Spainhour punched their ticket to the semifinal.
Lynchburg will now face the No. 1 seed Washington & Lee in Lexington this Thursday, Nov. 14.
