Belton, Texas -- The University of Lynchburg beach volleyball team won two of its five matches over the weekend on the campus of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Hornets took down Oklahoma Wesleyan 5-0 on Friday and Southwest Baptist 3-2 on Saturday.
All five matches went only two sets against Southwest Baptist. Virginia Zalinski and Sydney Phillips had the largest margin of victory across their two sets on the fifth court.
In a 5-0 loss to the defending national champion Hendrix to cap off Friday, SJ Yanz and Amanda Trapp forced a third set on the second court as did Mady Shirey and Parker Lynch on the third. Lynchburg's 2s only fell by two points, and Lynchburg's 3s fell by three as Hendrix swept the Hornets.
The Hornets defeated Southwest Baptist Saturday clinched by Yanz and Trapp on the second court. After Zalinski and Phillips won in three sets at No. 5, and Tori Williamson and Laney Burns won in three sets at No. 4, the Hornets only needed one more match victory to seal the overall win. Lynchburg's 3s lost in two sets, but Yanz and Trapp cruised to a 21-11, 21-15 victory for Lynchburg's second win of the weekend.
Yanz and Trapp also won in the first match of the day Saturday, but the Hornets fell to Nicholls 3-2. Zalinski and Phillips secured the other W in that loss to Nicholls.
The host school, Mary Hardin-Baylor, swept Lynchburg to close out the five-match trip in the Lone Star State.
The Hornets (4-4, 8-6 overall) travel to Catawba on Friday, March 15 for two matches.
