Beach volleyball heading to Florida for AVCA championship

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg beach volleyball team is headed to Tavares, Fla. to compete in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Small College Beach Championships.

The tournament begins Saturday, April 13 with pool play. Teams were divided into two pools based on seasonal results through Sunday, April 7. Lynchburg is the No. 5 seed and in Pool A along with No. 1 Mary Hardin-Baylor and No. 4 Berry. The Hornets take on Mary Hardin-Baylor at 8 a.m. and Berry at 10:10 a.m. on Saturday, April 13.

The top-two teams in each pool after the action Saturday will advance to the champions bracket on Sunday, April 14. The team finishing third in Pool A and the two teams finishing third and fourth in Pool B will play a round robin format on Sunday in the silver bracket.

Lynchburg enters the tournament with a 19-11 record overall and a 9-8 record in NCAA matches. Lynchburg will arrive in Florida on a four-match winning streak and is led by its pairs on the first-two courts. In NCAA matches this season, Kailey Keough and Jordan Pamer are 9-7 with a 6-6 record at No. 1. SJ Yanz and Amanda Trapp are 10-6 and carrying an 8-4 record on the second court. 

The AVCA Small College Beach Volleyball Championships is the largest collegiate beach volleyball event in the country with 29 teams competing in 425 total matches during the championship weekend. The event brings together the top beach teams in the country from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and the NAIA. A champion is crowned in each division along with recognition of All-America/All-Tournament teams. The championships also include a pairs challenge event for participating teams.
