Salem, Va -- The Lynchburg women's lacrosse team suffered a tough 20-4 defeat to Roanoke relinquishing a perfect conference record Wednesday night.
It was business as usual to start the game for Lynchburg as Mckenna Steinau opened the scoring in the first minute. It took the Maroons over eight minutes to find the equalizer in a tough-fought quarter between the two sides. Despite the low numbers on the scoreboard, both teams were pushing for goals, garnering 13 total shots in the first period. With just over a minute left, Lynchburg restored its lead on a goal from Reagan Bradley.
The second period told a much different story than the first, as Roanoke leveled the game early and shifted the momentum in its favor. The Maroons followed up with another 10 unanswered goals, taking a 12-2 lead into halftime. Roanoke restricted the Hornets to only a single shot in the second quarter, taking a firm hold on the game.
Roanoke was back on the front foot again in the second half. The Maroons recorded another four goals before Sydney Dumas broke the run with her 34th goal of the season. The Hornets found some attacking success in the third period but were once again held to only a single shot. Roanoke scored again to see out the quarter and headed into the final period with a 14-goal advantage.
Lynchburg put together several promising attacks in the final quarter as Dumas found the net once more. The Hornets also forced the Maroons into five turnovers, the most they had in the entire game. Despite the late rally from Lynchburg, Roanoke held its lead finding the net three more times and claiming victory.
Before the match, Lynchburg boasted a perfect 4-0 record in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Facing Roanoke was perhaps the biggest challenge for the Hornets in the conference so far. Roanoke (9-2, 4-0 ODAC) extended its record to five consecutive wins against Lynchburg with the victory.
Lynchburg is back to action at home on Sunday, April 7 for its CODE RED and Alumni game against Randolph-Macon at 1 p.m.
