Lynchburg, Va. - After splitting their first pair of games in the Hill City Classic, the Hornets had two more games today vs. Greensboro and North Carolina Wesleyan. Lynchburg lost their first matchup in five sets and won their final contest in four.
The Hornets kicked off their second day of action this morning against Greensboro in a back-and-forth affair.
The first set was a game of streaks, as both teams continued to seesaw back and forth, trading the lead. A 3-0 run from Lynchburg would be the final scoring burst that led to a 25-22 win.
Shortly after, Greensboro would claim the second set 25-19 led by Krista Brantley, who finished with 14 kills on the day.
In the third set, the two teams found themselves tied at 25-25. The Hornets turned to their two stars of the match, Ava Meinhardt and Leah DiNardo. A kill from DiNardo and an ace from Meinhardt would serve as the winning 26th and 27th points.
During this match, Meinhardt would tie a career-high 15 kills.
The fourth set brought more of the same, as the two teams battled late in the frame. Nonetheless, it was Greensboro coming out of the set with a 25-22 victory to set up the fifth.
Despite clinging to a 12-11 advantage late in the final set, Greensboro would go onto a 4-1 run to seal a five-set victory.
Shortly after, Lynchburg would retake the floor for their second game of the doubleheader against North Carolina Wesleyan.
In the first set, the Bishops came out and set the tone, winning 25-12. However, from that point on it was all Lynchburg. The Hornets would win the next three frames with ease.
Jaina Leek would tally five of the 15 service aces from Lynchburg in this match. DiNardo also set a season high 17 kills, in only 28 attempts.
The Hornets will now return to conference play with a matchup against Bridgewater on the road this upcoming Wednesday.
