Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg Director of Athletics Jon Waters welcomes Allen Smith as the new head coach of Lynchburg's men's golf program.
"We are thrilled to have Coach Allen back on Lakeside Dr! He is an exceptional coach that works hard to develop our players and build relationships with our recruits," said director of men's and women's golf Michael Veverka. "The work he did during his previous two years at Lynchburg helped push the program forward and played a role in the great seasons that the Hornets had in the last few years and especially with the 2024 ODAC Championship win. He continued that great work at Guilford and we are excited to have all of his talents back in the 'Burg this year and beyond!"
Smith returned to the Hill City in August 2024 after a stint at Guilford College, where he was the head men's golf coach and played a significant role in connecting with recruits, leading fundraising efforts, enhancing alumni engagement, and managing day-to-day operations for the men's golf program.Â
"First, thank you to Jon Waters and Mike Veverka for this opportunity," said coach Smith. "I am very excited to get things going and start competing. We have an excellent slate of events coming up and I know the guys are chomping at the bit to play!"
Prior to his time at Guilford, Smith was an assistant golf coach and recruiting coordinator for the University of Lynchburg from August 2021 through May 2023. While with the Hornets, he coached both the men's and women's programs while focusing on student-athlete development and recruitment. He also was a key piece in game operations and maintaining ties with the university alumni of the golf programs.
Smith has a plethora of experience around the game of golf. Before Lynchburg, he worked as a Tournament Operations/Rules Official in the summer of 2020 with the Georgia State Golf Association and helped organize junior golf tournaments while enforcing tournament regulations during the events.
While completing his degree at Hampden-Sydney College, Smith served as the team captain for the golf program. During his tenure, he earned Old Dominion Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year honors and achieved Academic All-American status. His exceptional leadership extended to the Faculty Athletic Committee and Habitat for Humanity, where he created a significant impact through his active participation in community service.
The University of Lynchburg is ecstatic to welcome back Allen Smith to the athletic department. Along with being the head men's golf coach, he will serve as the director of compliance for the Lynchburg athletic department.
