LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Lynchburg Hornets suffered their first conference loss of the season on the road against Washington and Lee, 2-1.
The Generals (11-4, 5-1) seized control early, striking first in the opening three minutes. Madeline Lancione found the back of the cage off an assist from Zoe Dolfis to put Washington and Lee in front of the Hornets (12-4, 5-1).
Just two minutes later, the Generals scored again. Junior midfielder Anne Burns Fiveash set up Sydney Baggett to extend the lead before the five-minute mark. Despite taking only two shots in the first quarter, the Generals made both count, each coming from their leading scorers.
Washington and Lee continued to disrupt Lynchburg's typically potent offense ---Â which ranks sixth in the nation in scoring ---Â holding the Hornets to just four total shots in the first half.
Lynchburg broke through in the third quarter when Maddie Schuchter connected with Danielle Coon to cut the deficit to one. However, the Generals' defensive pressure remained consistent, and the Hornets struggled to generate their usual rhythm. Lynchburg finished with just 11 shot attempts, their third fewest in a game this season, and tied their second fewest shots on goal (6).
For the third time this year, Lynchburg was held to a single goal or fewer -- all three resulting in losses.
The Hornets return home for the remainder of the regular season with two contests left. Next up, Lynchburg hosts Roanoke on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
