LYNCHBURG, Va. --Â Freshman forward
Hannah Christenbury recorded her first collegiate multi-goal performance, propelling Lynchburg to a 2-0 victory over Randolph-Macon in the ODAC semifinals.
For the ninth consecutive season, the Lynchburg Hornets (15-4, 7-1 ODAC) are headed back to the ODAC championship. The Hornets will face the winner of Shenandoah and Washington and Lee on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Shellenberger Field.
The matchup marked the first postseason meeting between the Hornets and Yellow Jackets (12-6, 5-4 ODAC) since the 2013 ODAC title game.
The contest opened as a defensive battle. Lynchburg controlled possession but struggled to get anything past Randolph-Macon goalkeeper Valentina Ambrogi-Torres. After coming up empty on their first 16 shot attempts, Christenbury took matters into her own hands. She gained possession near midfield, drove into the circle, and powered home the go-ahead goal with 18 seconds left in the first half, giving Lynchburg a 1-0 lead at the break.
The third quarter mirrored much of the early action, as the Hornets continued to apply pressure but were repeatedly turned away by the Yellow Jackets' back line.
However, Christenbury struck again in the fourth. After a tackle by junior midfielder Khanyisile Mzizi, the Zimbabwe native attacked the cage and found Christenbury wide open for her second goal, sealing the 2-0 win.
Lynchburg finished with a commanding 27 shots, including 18 on goal, while holding Randolph-Macon to just two attempts. The Hornets also dominated on penalty corners, 16-0.
