FOREST, Va. -- University of Lynchburg senior goalkeeper Shay Schoones received ODAC Defensive Player of the Week honors following her performances across three contests this past week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Schoones and the Hornets picked up one win across their three contests, including two matchups against nationally ranked opponents.
Across the three games, Schoones tallied 35 saves, including a season-best 13 against No. 23 Ursinus. In total, the Netherlands native allowed three goals and recorded a shutout against No. 20 Dickinson. The senior goalkeeper posted a .921 save percentage in the cage for the Hornets.
In the first matchup of the week, Schoones was tested mildly through the opening three quarters, facing just two shots on target. However, when Mary Washington began to apply pressure in the final quarter, Schoones answered the call. She made four crucial saves in the fourth to force extra time against the undefeated Eagles. Ultimately, Mary Washington converted on a two-on-one fast-break opportunity in overtime to claim the 1-0 victory.
In game two, Schoones and company were under pressure from the opening whistle. The Hornets faced 16 shots on goal throughout the matchup, including six in the opening quarter. After recording eight first-half saves, Schoones kept Lynchburg within striking distance for the remainder of the contest with six saves in the second half. Ultimately, the Hornets dropped a 2-1 decision to the nationally ranked Bears.
Schoones closed the week by recording her second shutout of the season. The Hornets converted on two of their three shots on target, while Schoones turned away all 12 Dickinson attempts on goal to secure the clean sheet.
The honor marks Lynchburg's first ODAC Player of the Week award of the season and the second of Schoones' collegiate career.
The Hornets resume action on the road with a trip to Lewiston, Maine, for a matchup against No. 10 Bates.
