Box Score 3 Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg men's volleyball split their games at home today, taking down Averett 3-0 and falling to Marymount 0-3.
The Hornets kicked off the afternoon with their second conference game of the season against the Averett Cougars. Lynchburg got the party started in the opening frame, taking a 2-0 advantage after back-to-back points from
Jeremiah Costello. From the opening moments, it was clear Costello was the hot hand today. The freshman outside hitter went on to lead the team in kills (12), aces (4), and diggs (8). After claiming an 11-5 lead, Lynchburg cruised to the finish line for a 25-21 first frame win.
After winning their first set in ODAC play this season, Averett began to show signs of life to commence the second set. The two squads found themselves deadlocked at 12 a piece at the midway mark. Nonetheless, the Hornets then immediately went on a 7-2 run to create the separation they needed to clinch a 25-18 victory.
Another quick 7-2 run to begin the third frame, gave Lynchburg the momentum once again, and the Hornets started to see the ball better than they had all day. Lynchburg finished the final frame with an attacking percentage of .565 compared to Averett's .000. The Hornets went on to win 25-17 for their third sweep this season.
After Marymount swept Averett in three sets, the two squads met at center stage. The opening set began with trading runs between the two. Then with an 11-10 Marymount advantage, the Saints began to take control. Esteban Jauregui found his rhythm offensively and would will Marymount to a 25-21 win.
In the second frame, the two squads would go back and forth and trade points.
Nick Redding began to catch fire as the freshman right-side hitter would go on to finish with a team-high 10 kills. Nevertheless, a late 7-1 run from the saints would catapult them to a 25-20 victory.
Despite being down by two sets, the Hornets refused to go away easily and kept their composure. The third frame proved to be the most exciting of all nine of the afternoon. The Hornets jumped out to a 17-13 lead as Turner grew increasingly louder. Moments later, Lynchburg held a 24-23 lead. But the Saints went on to close out the contest on a 3-0 to win the match on a 26-26 win.
The Hornets now turn to the road for their longest away slate of the year with six games. Lynchburg will be back in action this Wednesday, Feb. 5, as they take on Warren Wilson in Swannona, N.C.
