Beach Splits Opening Day Contests

Jefferson City, Tenn. -- The beach volleyball team got their season underway today with a 5-0 win over SVU and 1-4 loss to Carson-Newman.

The Lynchburg Hornets took on the Southern Virginia Knights in game one of their 4 game slate in Jefferson City, Tenn. This is the first time they will take on the Knights this weekend. They won in five straight sets for the sweep.

Kailey Keough/Mady Shirley, Jordan Palmer/Sydney Phillips, Parker Lynch/Laney Burns all took their sets in an immediate two games.

Game one was between Yanz and Trapp of Lynchburg and Claire Grasteilt and Kami Milius of Southern Virginia. The Hornet duo won the first set and finished the game in the third set.

Game two featured the Hornets Mady Shirey and Kailey Keough against the Knights Baylee Savage and Callie Truckfield. Keough and Shirey only needed two sets to win their match.

Game three featured a Hornet Duo in Sydney Phillips and Jordan Palmer and the Knight duo of Brynn Keeling and Charity Peterson. This match also ended in the first two sets in favor of Lynchburg.

The fourth game in this matchup was between Laney Burns and Parker Lynch of Lynchburg and Emily Peterson and London Skea of Carson-Newman. Parker and Laney swept their opponents with a 2-1 victory.

The final bout of the match was between a Hornet duo of Virginia Zalinski and Mackenzie Ingrassia and the Knight duo of Gabi Green and Mikki Prows. The Hornets took sets one and three from the Knights to finish off the sweep over the Knights.

Lynchburg fell to Carson-Newman 1-4 in their second match of the day. 

The Hornets play tomorrow against the Florida State College at Jacksonville in game one, and game two matched up against Southern Virginia once again.
