Softball Sweeps William Peace in Double Header

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg softball team got its season started with back-to-back wins over William Peace. The Hornets won the first game 8-0 and the second game 4-0.

In the first contest of the afternoon, Lexi Powell led the team with three hits, driving in two runs in the process. Powell and Alyssa Talayumptewa both scratched across two runs as well.

As a group, Lynchburg constantly found the gaps in the field. The Hornets tallied 12 hits in their opening contest, four of which went for extra bases. Lynchburg was aggressive on the base paths as well, stealing six bases in the first contest. Talayumptewa finished with a game-high two steals.

After a slow start offensively in the first two innings, the hot hitting became contagious for Lynchburg. The Hornets drove in a run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. With a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the sixth, Lynchburg slammed the door shut with an explosive frame. In the final frame, Lynchburg scored 5 runs before the Pacers could record an out to end the contest.

Kailey Dorcsis had a phenomenal outing, racking up eight strikeouts and allowing two hits.

In the second game of the afternoon, Emily Charlton picked up right where Dorcsis left off. Charlton tallied four strikeouts and allowed one hit through her six innings of work.

Lynchburg claimed two runs in the second inning, with an RBI single from Talayumptewa and a triple from Georgia Thompson

Once again, in the bottom of the sixth inning, the barrels began to heat up. A base knock from Anna Grace Terrell brought Addison Walter home and a sacrifice fly from Alex DiNardo brought Jessica Strickland in for a run.

Logan Curtis closed out the affair for Lynchburg in the top of the seventh. Sarah Watts and Lexi Powell connected in the final frame on a 4-2 double play to seal the win.

The Hornets will stay at home for their next matchup on Thursday, Feb. 27, against Mary Washington.
