Men's and Women’s Tennis Snag Wins in Hilton Head

Hilton Head, S.C. -- The University of Lynchburg men's and women's tennis teams are competing in Hilton Head during this week's spring break. The men so far have faced Penn St. Harrisburg and St. Mary's, winning both matches. The women dropped their match against Penn St. Harrisburg and won their second match of the invitational against Mount Union. 

The men's team were originally supposed to face Franciscan on Monday, Mar. 10, but the match was cancelled due to weather. They faced Penn St. Harrisburg on Mar. 11 and cruised to a 6-1 victory. Junior Alex Rintoul and freshman Sebastian Soria won their match on court two 6-1. Juniors Jorge Patricio Zepeda and Sebastian Sierra followed with a 6-3 victory on court three to clinch the doubles point for the Hornets. The top doubles pairing of freshmen Timothee Depaquit and Luca Morbioli won their match 6-4.

In singles action, Rintoul won 6-1, 6-2 on court three. Morbioli prevailed in a three-set thriller at the top flight 6-0, 4-6, 10-4. Inversely, Soria dropped his match on court two for the Hornets in three sets, falling 2-6, 6-2, 6-10. Sierra won his match at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-1, clinching the match for Lynchburg. Junior Dan Hardy bageled his opponent in both sets on the bottom court. Depaquit finished the outing for Lynchburg with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory on court five.

The men then swept St. Mary's Maryland Tuesday evening to improve to 5-0 in DIII action. Depaquit and Morbioli slipped away with a 7-6 (7-3 tiebreak) victory at the top doubles court. Rintoul and Soria won 6-2 on court two. Zepeda and Hardy bageled their opponent on the bottom doubles court.

Morbioli, slotted at the top singles flight, won 6-1, 6-0. Soria won 6-4, 6-3 on court two. Rintoul won 6-0, 6-0 on court three. Sierra won his match at the fourth flight, taking both sets 6-2. Depaquit continued his dominance at the fifth flight with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Freshman Oliver Lizano took a 6-0, 6-1 victory on the bottom court.

The women's team was originally supposed to face St. Mary's Maryland on Sunday, Mar. 9, but the match was cancelled due to weather. Instead, they opened against Penn St. Harrisburg, where they fell 3-4. The Hornets dropped all three doubles matches. Freshmen Kayla Kosiorek and Harper Dodd dropped their match on court two 3-6. Senior Elora Grochowski and junior Reese McAtee fell on the bottom court 6-7. Graduate student Maria Caro and junior Ashley Hair fell on the top court 6-7. 

In singles action, Kosiorek won her match at the second flight 7-6, 6-0. Caro, slotted on the top court, dropped both sets 6-7. Hair fell in three sets on court three. Dodd dropped both sets 1-6, clinching the match for Penn St. Harrisburg. The Hornets ended the match on a positive note, picking up victories on their bottom two courts. Grochowski cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory on the bottom court to pick up her first career win. McAtee won in a three set thriller on court five.

The Hornets bounced back with a 5-2 victory against Mount Union Wednesday evening. All three doubles courts breadsticked their opponents. Hair and Caro finished first, followed by Kosiorek and Dodd. McAtee and Grochowski concluded the Hornets' dominant doubles showing.

Caro bageled her opponent in both sets at the top flight. Hair followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory on court three. Kosiorek clinched the match at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-1. Dodd dropped her match at No. 4 singles 0-6, 3-6. Grochowski won at No. 5 singles 6-2, 1-6, 10-8. Freshman Kamerin East dropped her match at the bottom flight 2-6, 3-6.

Both the men's (5-0, 1-0 ODAC) and women's (2-1) teams will conclude their spring break slate of matches against Messiah Thursday, March 13 at 1 p.m.
