Box Score Virginia Beach, Va. -- The Lynchburg men's volleyball squad fell to the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins in a four-set affair on the road.
Nick Redding led the team as the sole hornet with double-digit kills, notching 10 on the night. Sophomore middle block Brace Jackson notched three rejections and three aces.
Miller Varley tabbed 30 assists for the seventh time this season.
The Marlins opened up the first set with strong offensive play, kicking off the first frame with a 13-7 advantage. The Hornets battled back to put themselves within striking distance, but a 7-2 run from the Marlins ultimately sealed the first set 25-15.
In the second set, Lynchburg's defense created a more competitive frame. The Hornets protected the net, sending back four Marlin attempts. A late surge of offense from Lynchburg gave the Hornets a 22-17 advantage. However, Virginia Wesleyan responded at a crucial moment, going on a 9-2 run to claim to capture a 26-24 victory.
In the third set, Lynchburg got back on track. The Hornets tabbed three service aces and tallied their best-hitting percentage of the match, 0.208. The Marlins also recorded their highest number of attacking errors in the contest in the third frame with nine. Lynchburg avoided the sweep with a 25-22 win.
Virginia Wesleyan and Lynchburg found themselves in yet another late competitive set in the fourth frame. Neither team led by more than four points at any given moment, trading runs back and forth. Nevertheless, the Marlins ultimately prevailed with a 25-23 victory.
The Hornets (9-12) stay in conference play for their penultimate ODAC season match against Roanoke (18-8) in Salem, Va. for their next match on Wednesday, April 2.
