Winchester, Va. – The University of Lynchburg indoor track & field squads sent athletes to the South Region Final Qualifier at Shenandoah and Tufts National Qualifier in Boston on Saturday to set final marks in anticipation of the NCAA Championships next weekend.
Saturday marked the final day to register results as the NCAA prepares to announce the national field on Sunday, March 9.
From Tufts, Allison Dell clocked 17:05.65 to finish first in the women's 5,000m run. With the conversion benefits of racing on a flat track, the senior places inside the top 20 with a chance to qualify for the national championships depending on final results.
The remainder of the team competed at Shenandoah University against several local opponents.Â
In his first time in a Hornets uniform, freshman Jamarcus Brown lept 6' 8½" (2.05m) in the men's high jump to win the contest and finish inside the nation's top 20. Brown, a member of the Lynchburg men's basketball team, transitioned to the track squad following the team's defeat in the ODAC Tournament. His performance is Lynchburg's best since 1998 when David Lichtenstein set a 6' 10¾" school record.
Teammate Elijah Rose finished second with a 6' 5½" (1.97m) mark.
Margo Fox also cracked the history books, tallying 3294 points in the women's heptathlon to break the school record and finish third in the contest. This result places Fox within the top 30 in the nation for the event.
Betsy Mohnkern clocked 8.82 in the 60H finals to finish first, missing her 2024 personal best by six-hundredths of a second. The race only featured two athletes, and despite running without a dense field, Mohnkern set her season best.
Rylee Turner crossed the line in 7.93 in the women's 60m dash prelims, advancing to place fifth with a 7.97 finish in the finals. Turner's 7.90 and 7.96 performances at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships last weekend marked her first results under the eight-second mark.
Allison Bobst (11' 5" or 3.48m) and Cameron Weber (10' 5" or 3.18m) set top-ten performances in the women's pole vault, finishing fourth and seventh, respectively.
Final qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Rochester, N.Y. will be released on Sunday, March 9.
