Lynchburg, Va. --Â The Lynchburg softball team returns to Moon Field on Wednesday, April 2, for a doubleheader against the Guilford Quakers.
Guilford has had the upper hand in recent matchups, winning four of the last five meetings. Last season, the Quakers swept the Hornets in a doubleheader on this exact date.
Guilford (9-15) enters the contest on a four-game losing streak, having been swept by both Virginia Wesleyan and Randolph-Macon. Despite their struggles, the Quakers' pitching staff has been a bright spot, ranking second in the ODAC with 103 strikeouts. Freshman Abbey Whelan leads the rotation with 34 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to a team-best .292 batting average.
However, defensive struggles have plagued Guilford, as the team has committed 26 errors—second-most in the conference and 19 more than the third-place team.
At the plate, the Quakers have eight players batting .300 or better (minimum 20 at-bats). Sophomore Brooke Goyings has been a standout performer, hitting .392 with 20 hits and three RBIs.
Lynchburg (11-9) enters this matchup after being swept in three of its last four doubleheaders.
Both of the Hornets' starting pitchers, Kailey Drocsis and Emily Charlton, rank in the top 10 in the ODAC with ERAs under 2.00.
Offensively, several Lynchburg players have seen a recent dip in their batting averages, with only two hitters currently above .300 (minimum 20 at-bats). Sarah Watts leads the team, hitting .361.
Following this home doubleheader, Lynchburg will travel to Danville, Va., for a conference matchup against the Averett Cougars on Saturday, April 5.
