Softball Sweeps Sweet Briar

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Amherst, Va. — Lynchburg softball picked up a pair of ODAC road wins on Saturday, taking down Sweet Briar 7–4 in eight innings and 5–1 in the doubleheader sweep.

In game one, Madison Barnes, Sarah Watts, and Kaleigh Hackett each collected two hits. Barnes added three RBIs and scored twice to pace the Hornets' offense.

Sweet Briar broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third with a run on a fielder's choice and added two more following a Lynchburg error. The Hornets answered in the fourth when Hackett singled to right field to drive in Barnes. In the sixth, Watts tied the game with an RBI double, scoring Carly Hudnall, and then came home herself on a sacrifice fly from Barnes.

With the game tied 3–3 after seven, Lynchburg exploded for four runs to open the eighth. Sweet Briar pushed across one in the bottom half, but Kailey Dorsis and the Hornet defense held strong to seal the 7–4 win.

Barnes stayed hot in game two, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and a run scored—giving her six hits, seven RBIs, and three runs on the day. This is the second time Barnes has tallied four hits in a game during her collegiate career, both of which have come this season. Watts, Alyssa Talayumptewa, and Lexi Powell also notched multi-hit games.

Talayumptewa opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single, followed by a three-run homer from Barnes to put Lynchburg up 4–0 early. Barnes added her fourth RBI with a single in the third inning to drive in Watts.

Kate Charlton and Dorsis combined in the circle to hold Sweet Briar to just three hits with no walks in game two.

Lynchburg improves to 18–10 overall and now turns its focus to Bridgewater for another road doubleheader tomorrow, April 13, in Harrisonburg.
