Lynchburg, Va. – The Lynchburg Hornets hit the road one final time in the regular season as they travel to Ferrum on Tuesday, April 22, for a 4 p.m. matchup against the Panthers.
In recent history, Lynchburg has dominated this series, winning nine of the last ten meetings—including a sweep at Moon Field last season.
Ferrum (13-19, 9-9 ODAC) welcomes the Hornets while currently holding the sixth spot in the ODAC standings. The Panthers are coming off their third split in the last four series. After starting the season 2-10, Ferrum has begun to find momentum at the right time, with postseason play quickly approaching.
Freshman catcher Mirenda Shields has been a bright spot in the Panthers' lineup. She leads the team in both batting average (.296) and on-base percentage (.433), recording 24 hits and 20 walks—second-most in the ODAC. Despite her efforts, Ferrum's offense ranks second-to-last in the conference with a team batting average of .229, narrowly ahead of Randolph.
Lynchburg (21-13, 12-6 ODAC) enters Tuesday's contest after a tough sweep at the hands of No. 3 Christopher Newport, where the Hornets were held scoreless in both games. Still, they sit fourth in the ODAC standings, two games ahead of Shenandoah and two behind Bridgewater.
The Hornets boast the third-best ERA in the ODAC at 1.74, and rank third in opposing batting average (.224). The pitching duo of Emily Charlton and Kailey Dorcsis has been crucial all season, owning the fourth and fifth-best ERAs in the conference, respectively, and ranking eighth and ninth in opposing batting average.
Lynchburg will return home to close out the regular season on Saturday, April 26, when they host No. 18 Randolph-Macon at Moon Field.
