Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team cruised past Susquehanna, 8-1, behind a career-best performance from junior forward
Anna Dorrestijn.
Dorrestijn delivered an eye-popping four goals and an assist — all in the opening half. Her scoring spree tied the ninth-highest single-game goal total in program history and ranked among the top-15 all time for points in a match, all in just the first 30 minutes.
The Netherlands native began her offensive onslaught late in the first quarter, cashing in off a feed from Aurora Balsamo off a penalty corner. Less than a minute later, Dorrestijn struck again. A quick outlet from Allie Freeman set up Danielle Coon, whose pass found Dorrestijn in front to double the lead.
Lynchburg continued to ride the hot hand in the second quarter. Driving right and creating space, Dorrestijn unleashed another powerful shot to complete her hat trick fewer than 17 minutes into the contest.
With the defense focused squarely on Dorrestijn, she spun away from a defender inside the circle and dished to freshman midfielder Fenna den Bieman, who finished cleanly to push the margin to 4-0.
Dorrestijn capped her stellar first half with a fourth goal off a penalty corner. After receiving the insertion, she and Khanyisile Mzizi executed a crisp give-and-go to put Lynchburg up 5-0.
The Hornets added three more tallies after the break: Coon and Freeman scored in the third quarter, while Maddie Schuchter closed the scoring in the fourth.
With the win, Lynchburg improves to 4-2 and will face another ranked opponent next Saturday, Sept. 27, taking on No. 14 York in a neutral-site clash at Sweet Briar College.
