Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team earned its first ranked win of the season, defeating No. 11 York 3-1 on Shellenberger Field.
The Spartans controlled the early stages of the contest, dominating possession and holding advantages in both shots and penalty corners. York's Kelbie Linebaugh broke through in the first quarter, scoring what proved to be the lone goal of the opening half.
After the break, the Hornets found their rhythm offensively and quickly turned the tide. In the third quarter, Saar Prins rifled home her third goal of the season to level the score at 1-1.
Lynchburg carried the momentum, generating repeated chances in the circle. Freshman Fenna den Bieman capitalized on a rebound to put the Hornets ahead, her second goal in as many games. Just four minutes later, Maddie Schuchter sealed the victory, finishing a setup from Danielle Coon to make it 3-1.
Despite being outshot 14-12, Lynchburg leaned on goalkeeper Shay Schoones, who turned in a stellar performance with six saves — her second-highest total this season.
The Hornets (5-2) return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 28, at home against Sewanee (4-4).
