Lynchburg, Va. -- The Hornets remained unbeaten at home this season, defeating the Sewanee Tigers, 4-1, on Shellenberger Field.
Lynchburg (6-2) got on the board in the opening stages, as Tatum Humphries converted a penalty stroke just three minutes into the match, her second of the season.
Junior forward Danielle Coon extended the lead early in the second quarter with the first of her two goals on the day. The Hornets continued to apply pressure, and a penalty corner lead to Grace Peterson adding another score minutes later, assisted by Callie Short, to push the advantage to 3-0.
Sewanee responded late in the half, cutting into the deficit with a goal from Catherine Crane in the 27th minute.
The Hornets continued to dictate the pace in the second half, firing off eight shots in the third after tabbing nine in the second quarter. Coon struck again in the 35th minute, her second tally of the afternoon, to secure the 4-1 result.
Lynchburg controlled possession throughout, outshooting Sewanee 24-2 and holding a 14-3 edge in penalty corners. The Tigers' goalkeeper finished with six saves to keep the margin manageable, while the Hornets' defense limited Sewanee to just two total attempts.
With the win, Lynchburg remains unbeaten on Shellenberger Field and extends its current winning streak to three. On their home turf this fall, the Hornets have outscored opponents 20-5 — compared to a 5-3 margin on the road.
The Hornets now turn to a set of contests on the road in New Jersey next weekend, playing Stockton on Saturday, Oct. 4Â and No. 18 Rowan on Sunday, Oct. 5.
