St. Mary's City, Md. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team used an astonishing finish from
Cristobal Massanet in the ending minutes of the outing to claim a 1-1 draw against Salisbury on Saturday night at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
The Hornets (1-0-2) played 64:42 of the contest trailing by one after conceding a first-half goal to the SeaGulls' (1-1-2) Liam Pierce in the 18th minute, but evened the score with 8:13 left in the affair with a sensational long-range strike by Massanet. Salisbury netted their score off a corner taken by Kai Lindsay, who was credited with an assist on the play. The SeaGulls collected at the top of the box, dispersed towards the frame as Lindsay sent it in from the corner, and the ball found the head of Pierce, who knocked it through.
In the 82nd minute, the ball ricocheted to the feet of Massanet in open space, nearly 30 feet from the goal frame. The Mallorca, Spain native settled the ball and fired a heater that sailed with pace over the outstretched arms of netminder Clif Nehman into the top bins. Each side stood stout defensively to finish with a one-goal apiece draw.
Throughout the 90-minute competition, both squads were nearly identical on the stat sheet. Though Salisbury doubled Lynchburg's shot attempts in the first half by a margin of 8-4, the Hornets came out of the break with assertiveness, allowing just three shots for the final 45 minutes and firing off seven of their own. Each team stopped five shots:
Thomas Viscuso tallied five saves for Lynchburg while Nathen Jones (four saves) and Nehman (one save) combined for just as many.
The Hornets have a quick turnaround and will take to the pitch tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. against St. Mary's.
