St. Mary's City, Md. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team traded blows with St. Mary's before ultimately coming out on top, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium to wrap up a weekend swing on the eastern shore of Maryland.
The Hornets (2-0-2) scored in the 13th, 44th, and 86th minutes to claim victory against the Seahawks (2-3-0). The Lynchburg performers who were credited with goals were
William Casey,
Kohlby Wilson, and
Matthew Viscuso.
Keaton Napior,Â
Bruno Rihl Silva, andÂ
Saul Lopez Coreas each tallied assists in today's contest. St. Mary's Marco Mazzola and Franco Reyes sandwiched goals between Lynchburg's three scores.
The first goal of the outing came shortly after a corner kick for the Hornets. Following a short pass from the corner, Napior sent a ball into the box that found the head of Silva. He knocked it towards the frame and Casey finished with his right foot into the bottom left corner for the first score of the match. The Seahawks evened the score in the 33rd minute, but Lynchburg took back the advantage before halftime.
With about two minutes to go before the break, Lynchburg was awarded a free kick around 30 yards from the goal frame. Off the kick, the ball was sent back out by a St. Mary's defender. Lopes Coreas sent it back into the box and Wilson buried it into the lower left corner to give Lynchburg a one goal edge heading into the intermission.
Over 30 minutes of game action went by before the Seahawks knotted the score once again in the 75th minute. With just under five minutes to go and the Hornets applying pressure in the offensive area, Viscuso delivered a shot from the top left area just outside of the box that found its way to the bottom of the opposite corner, ultimately securing the Lynchburg victory.
Though the Hornets scored twice in the first half, they picked up pace on the offensive end in the second half, firing off 14 shots in the final 45 minutes compared to eight shots in the first half. Nine of Lynchburg's 22 total shots were on frame. The defense held St. Mary's to 10 total shots and only five landed on target.Â
The Hornets remain unbeaten through four games and will return home for their next competition, squaring off against Regent on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m.
