Haverford, Pa. -- The Lynchburg volleyball team capped its three-match road swing at the Ford Invite on Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Haverford before falling 3-0 to Springfield in the afternoon.
With their opening win of the day, the Hornets secured the best start in program history at 7-0.
Lynchburg set the tone early against the Fords, hitting efficiently with 14 kills and just one error on 34 swings in the first set. A late 5-3 surge pushed the Hornets ahead for a 25-21 win.
The momentum carried into the second frame, where Lynchburg jumped out to a 12-6 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 25-17 victory. Head coach Kevin Cardoza's squad sealed the sweep in a tight third set, leaning on Kate Hardie and Tori Williamson, who delivered the final four points to secure another 25-21 result.
Jacqueline Bryant led the Hornets with nine kills to go with two aces and two blocks. Williamson and Kailey Keough each chipped in eight kills, while Ava Meinhardt starred at the net with four blocks.
The afternoon matchup against nationally ranked Springfield proved more challenging, as the Pride handed Lynchburg its first loss of the season. The Hornets struggled offensively, hitting in the negatives during the opening two sets, which Springfield claimed 25-20 and 26-24.
A 9-1 Springfield run in the third set gave the Pride enough cushion to close out the match, 25-19.
Now 7-1, Lynchburg returns home to Turner Gymnasium next Friday, Sept. 12, for matches against Columbia (S.C.) and Hood.
